Lab-Grown Diamonds

What are lab-grown diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds, also known as synthetic diamonds, are real diamonds created in labs that mimic the growth conditions of natural, mined diamonds. Unlike crystals or moissanite, lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and nearly optically identical to natural diamonds. It takes a highly trained eye and specialized equipment to tell them apart.

Is the quality as good as natural diamonds?

The quality of lab-grown diamonds is directly comparative to natural diamonds, as they are both graded on the same scale known as the 4 Cs:

  1. Carat Weight: The weight of a diamond, measured in carats, where larger diamonds are rarer and more expensive.
  2. Color Grade: The whiteness of a diamond, ranging from D (Colorless) to Z (Light Color), where colorless diamonds are usually more desired.
  3. Clarity Grade: The flawlessness of a diamond, ranging from FL (Flawless) to I (Included). Note that although lab-grown diamonds avoid the natural inclusions that form during geological processes, they can have flaws from the manufacturing process.
  4. Cut Grade: The craftsmanship of a diamond, ranging from Excellent to Poor, which determines how a diamond reflects light to appear bright and sparkly.

Why should I choose lab-grown diamonds?

The natural process of diamond formation does indeed carry a strong sentiment—it was created after billions of years under intense heat and pressure, and high quality ones (large, colorless, flawless, well-cut) are very precious, which is why diamonds are a popular a symbol of the resilience and rarity of one’s love.

However, with the growing awareness of natural diamonds being associated with forced labor and conflict areas, more and more people are choosing lab-grown diamonds over natural diamonds. Although lab-grown diamonds are created in 1-4 weeks, rather than billions of years, they are still real diamonds, and their historical association with the resilience of love is not diminished.

Lastly, with wedding planning often being stressful, the cost savings of lab-grown diamonds can significantly reduce the financial strain of engagement and wedding rings, making it a great choice for the financially aware.
